Merchant product data connecting a catalog to rich shopping ads across desktop and mobile surfaces
THE PRACTICAL OVERVIEW

Google Shopping Ads — product data becomes the creative

Shopping ads are product-rich ads built from Merchant Center data. Depending on the campaign and surface, they can show a product image, title, price, store name and additional annotations before the shopper clicks. Retailers manage this inventory in Google Ads through Standard Shopping or Performance Max campaigns. The presentation is visual, but eligibility and relevance begin with accurate product and store data.

How Shopping ad delivery works

Merchant Center supplies the product details that Google uses to understand what you sell. The account is linked to Google Ads, where campaign settings, budget, bidding, locations and inventory filters determine which products can enter an auction. Unlike Search ads, Shopping matching primarily uses product data rather than positive keyword lists. Google may also use information from the landing page, images and other signals to enrich eligible ads.

Standard Shopping and Performance Max can both promote online or eligible local Merchant Center inventory

Price and availability must match the product data, landing page, structured data and checkout experience

Eligible free listings can run alongside paid ads, but free-listing approval never guarantees an impression

A product moving through image, title, price, inventory and identifier quality checks
Data quality before delivery
One product catalog splitting into controlled shopping management and broader multi-channel delivery
Control and reach are different choices
MERCHANT CENTER REALITY

Automation is a safety net, not a substitute for clean data

Merchant Center can automatically update price, availability and condition when its crawlers detect differences on your website, and those automations are enabled by default in many accounts. They are designed to correct temporary mismatches, not replace reliable product-data updates. Use accurate descriptive titles, compliant high-quality images and the correct variant data. Submit a GTIN only when the manufacturer has assigned one — never guess or invent an identifier.

STANDARD OR PERFORMANCE MAX

Choose the operating model, not a fashionable label

Standard Shopping serves across a selected set of shopping and search surfaces and provides direct campaign, product-group, inventory-filter and campaign-priority controls. Performance Max is goal-based, uses automated bidding and can distribute product-led ads across most Google Ads channels, including Search, Shopping, Images, YouTube, Display, Gmail, Demand Gen and Maps where eligible. When campaigns overlap, Google generally resolves eligibility through its prioritization rules and Ad Rank — Performance Max is not automatically entitled to every shared auction.

Common questions

Merchant Center is the hub where a retailer manages store and product data for paid Shopping ads and eligible free product experiences. To advertise that inventory, link Merchant Center to Google Ads and keep the products approved for the intended country and marketing method.

Use accurate descriptive titles, high-quality compliant images and product details that match the landing page and checkout. Keep price and availability current, submit a GTIN only when one is assigned, structure variants correctly and review the Needs attention area regularly.

Yes. Eligible products may appear for free across Search, Maps, Gemini, YouTube, the Shopping tab, Images and Lens. These listings operate separately from paid Shopping ads, and eligibility does not guarantee that a product will receive an impression.

Both can use Merchant Center inventory. Standard Shopping offers a more direct campaign and product-group structure across selected shopping and search surfaces. Performance Max uses goal-based automation to reach most Google Ads channels. Choose according to the control, creative, bidding and measurement your business needs.

Shopping ads primarily use Merchant Center product data rather than positive keyword lists to determine eligibility and relevance. Product titles, descriptions, identifiers, categories and other attributes therefore influence matching. Campaign-level exclusions and Performance Max search themes have different roles from Search campaign keywords.
