One video advertising campaign adapting across television, desktop, mobile and discovery formats
THE PRACTICAL OVERVIEW

YouTube Ads — video reach across every viewing mode

YouTube Ads can reach people on YouTube videos, discovery surfaces, Shorts and the YouTube Home feed, with eligible formats also extending to Google video partners. Delivery can span phones, computers, tablets and TV screens. The format, buying method and optimization available to you depend on the campaign objective and subtype — there is no single universal “YouTube campaign” setup.

How YouTube ad delivery works

Your campaign objective determines which Video campaign subtypes, ad formats and bidding strategies are available. Most video creatives must be uploaded to YouTube as public or unlisted videos before they can be used. Google then enters eligible ads into auctions based on budget, bidding, audience or content settings, location, device, inventory and predicted performance. Masthead placements can also be bought through reservation rather than the standard auction flow.

Formats include skippable and non-skippable in-stream, bumper, in-feed, Shorts and Masthead ads

BIDDING & BILLING

Format and billing are connected

There is no reliable universal cost-per-view benchmark. Auction prices depend on inventory, competition, geography, audience, creative, bidding and the outcome you optimize for. With TrueView cost-per-view bidding, skippable in-stream ads count a billable view when someone watches 30 seconds, finishes a shorter ad or interacts first. In-feed autoplay and Shorts use a 10-second threshold or the full ad when shorter. Bumper and non-skippable formats use impression-based bidding, while conversion-focused campaigns can optimize with CPA or Maximize conversions strategies.

CREATIVE & CONTROL

Build for attention, then measure by format

Google’s current creative framework is ABCD: Attention, Branding, Connection and Direction. That means entering the story quickly, making the brand unmistakable, creating a relevant human or product connection and giving the viewer a clear next step. Evaluate reach, frequency, TrueView views, interactions and conversions by ad format rather than blending every placement into one average. Content targeting can use topics, keywords or placements in supported campaigns, but new video conversion campaigns do not support content targeting.

Common questions

Google Ads supports skippable and non-skippable in-stream ads, bumper ads, in-feed video ads, YouTube Shorts ads and Masthead ads. Availability depends on the campaign objective, subtype, bidding method and buying route.

There is no fixed price or dependable universal CPV. Most campaigns use an auction, while Masthead can use reservation buying. Depending on the format and strategy, you may be charged for TrueView views or impressions, or optimize toward conversions.

Supported Video campaigns can use placement targeting for specific YouTube channels or videos. Google currently requires a minimum selection of 10 channels or videos when adding these placements. Content targeting is not available for every subtype, including campaigns optimized specifically for conversions.

There is no single ideal length. Bumpers are six seconds or shorter. Skippable in-stream ads have no formal maximum, although Google recommends less than three minutes. Non-skippable and Shorts guidance varies by campaign subtype and placement, so build each asset for its intended format.

Under TrueView CPV bidding, an in-stream view is counted after 30 seconds, the full ad when shorter, or an interaction — whichever comes first. In-feed autoplay and Shorts use a 10-second threshold or the full ad when shorter, with format-specific interaction rules. Public YouTube views and billable TrueView views are different metrics.
