Performance Max is a goal-based campaign type for sales, leads, and eligible local-store objectives. It can use inventory across Search, Display, YouTube, Discover, Gmail, Maps and Search partners from one campaign. Google AI chooses bids, placements and creative combinations against the conversion goals you provide. That does not make PMax universally superior or a compulsory replacement for channel-specific campaigns.
You define conversion goals, values, budget and an automated bidding strategy such as Maximize conversions or Maximize conversion value, optionally with a CPA or ROAS target. Asset groups supply themed text, images, logos and videos; a Merchant Center feed can add retail inventory. Audience signals, Search themes and first-party data help the system learn, while Smart Bidding evaluates eligible auctions in real time. Reliable conversion tracking and sensible values are therefore operating requirements, not optional polish.
One campaign budget is optimized across eligible inventory — you cannot assign a separate budget to each channel
Asset groups should follow a coherent product, service or audience theme rather than acting as a miscellaneous asset folder
Audience signals are suggestions, not hard targeting boundaries; delivery can expand beyond the people you add
Final URL expansion is enabled by default and can replace the supplied landing page with another relevant page on the same domain; URL exclusions and page feeds help control that routing, or the feature can be turned off. Campaign-level negative keywords and brand exclusions influence Search and Shopping inventory, not every PMax channel. Account-level placement exclusions, content exclusions and inventory settings handle other brand-suitability needs. Search themes can guide matching, but they are not positive keywords and do not limit the campaign to those searches.
Performance Max can overlap with Search, Shopping, Display and other campaigns. An identical eligible exact-match Search keyword is prioritized for that query; in many other overlapping auctions, Google uses its prioritization rules and Ad Rank. Review channel contribution, search terms, asset groups, products, placements, conversion lag and new-versus-existing customer results. A strong blended ROAS can still conceal low-value goals, weak lead quality or brand traffic that another campaign already captured.

Performance Max is goal-based and can use eligible inventory across Google’s channels from one campaign, with Smart Bidding deciding bids and placements. Channel-specific campaigns usually provide more direct control over their own formats, targeting, budgets and reporting. PMax can complement them rather than automatically replacing them.
Asset groups organize related headlines, descriptions, images, logos and videos around a common theme or audience. Google combines eligible assets into ads for different inventory. Retail campaigns can also associate product listing groups with asset groups.
No. Audience signals are suggestions that help Google AI learn who may be valuable. Performance Max can serve beyond those audiences when it predicts that doing so will help achieve the campaign’s conversion goals.
It is most appropriate when conversion tracking and values are reliable, the business has clear sales, lead or store goals, strong creative assets are available and cross-channel automation is acceptable. Performance Max does not support App installs as a goal.
Current tools include channel performance reporting, asset and asset-group metrics, search-term reporting, placement reports, Search themes, campaign-level negative keywords, brand exclusions, URL exclusions, Final URL expansion controls, and device or age controls where available. You still cannot assign a separate budget to each channel inside one PMax campaign.
