Smart Bidding labels are changing — the bidding logic is not

Google is simplifying the names shown for two Search bidding strategies. Here is what changed, what stayed the same and what to check in your account.

Starting in June 2026, Google Ads began changing how two Smart Bidding strategies are labelled. “Maximize conversions with a Target CPA” is becoming “Target CPA”, while “Maximize conversion value with a Target ROAS” is becoming “Target ROAS”.

What actually changed

The interface wording is shorter. Google says the underlying bidding behaviour remains the same, so this is not a migration to a different algorithm and advertisers do not need to rebuild campaigns.

What it means for a Search account

Reporting exports, internal naming conventions and team documentation may temporarily show different labels while the rollout completes. The useful work is to verify the campaign goal, conversion actions and target — not to react to the new wording.

The PPC4.biz check

Use the label change as a reason to audit whether each campaign is optimizing for conversions or conversion value. A clean conversion setup matters more than the name displayed beside the strategy.
